About Kites

Desert Kite Festival at Taj Mahal in Agra, India
Kiyomi Okawa

The kiting universe is vast, at once ancient and rapidly expanding, not just in the sky but now in cyberspace. This section of the Drachen Foundation site offers a brief introduction to kites, with a Drachen twist. Kite Basics defines types of kites--how, where, and in what winds they are launched, fly, and land, all safely. Kite Building discusses basic materials, with links to those available at Drachen's online store. Kite History/Timelines describes the Eastern and Western origins of kites, and highlights significant events during kiting's long history.

Kites are flown almost everywhere around the world: Kite Cultures provides thumbnail sketches of kite traditions in countries where Drachen has been involved, with links to the resources it provides. Art Kites, Kites in Science & Tech, and Kite Sports look at these topics of growing interest at Drachen and among kite enthusiasts worldwide. Kite Personalities profiles kite innovators and advocates whose activities complement those of the foundation. Check back periodically for additions to these categories. Where to See Kites points out favorite festivals and museums where kites can be seen in flight or on display. Kite Resources lists favorite books and websites for learning more about kites.

As you become "kite crazy" (tako kichi in Japanese), please continue to explore this site, to discover the many niches of kiting in which the Drachen Foundation takes an interest.

Anonymous definition of a kite: A light frame covered with paper or cloth and flown in a breeze at the end of a long string in the hands of a highly enlightened person.
