Painting Kites at the Cambodian Museum
Simon Bond

Almost eradicated under the Khmer Rouge regime, the two-thousand-year-old Cambodian kite culture has been revived through the diligence of the country's Minister of Cultural and Fine Arts and his wife, with support from the Drachen Foundation. Cambodia's signature kite, the khleng ek, is traditionally large (fifteen feet by twelve feet), with a curved bamboo frame, broad wings and a pinched waist, and a vibrating reed or "hummer" on top. Simple children's kites are called pocket kites.
