Drachen Foundation Grant Recipients for 2004

The Drachen Foundation’s Board of Directors has reviewed the grant solicitations for 2004. We are pleased of the range and scope of the grant applications for this year, noting that our applicants reflect the international location and diversity of kite applications about which the foundation was created.

The following individuals will receive grants for 2004:

The Study of Humpback Whale Behavior, Bay of Banderas, Mexico
Kite Aerial Photography

Using Kite Aerial Photography, a technical opportunity to document and study the affects of human behavior on humpback whales.

Art and Nature Multi-disciplinary Event

A multi-disciplinary event to focus on the birds of the Great Salt Lake, Nature Conservancy’s Shoreline Preserve, blending nature and art, creating a educational learning platform for a diverse community. Using world class artists working in different media, a collaboration will create this theme in schools, as well as an evening performance on the Great Salt Lake in November.

The Wilderness Research High Arctic Expedition

The Use of Kites in Wilderness Research

To enable Wilderness Research Foundation to mount a scientific expedition to Axel Heiberg Island in the Canadian High Arctic for a 6-8 week period during the summer of 2004. This expedition will enable individual researches to explore their various areas of study and in a multidisciplinary framework, help advance the frontiers of human knowledge. The Wilderness Research Foundation will disseminate information on one of the last areas of pristine wilderness, promoting the heritage of pure scientific exploration.
The Drachen Foundation will aid in support of signal kites in exchange for a article on Arctic research by Richard E. Byrd.

Research grant, to study and survey the Kites of Asia, the focus being the countries of Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia

Boys and Girls Clubs of King County, Wallingford/Seattle, Washington

Kite Educational Workshops, May 15, 2004

The Boys and Girls Clubs of Seattle, will inspire and enable all young people, especially those in disadvantaged circumstances, to realize their full potential as productive, responsible and caring citizens by using kites as the focus of their spring event.
As a platform for their national organizations, the Drachen Foundation will help fund and implement the educational workshops for kite making.
This assistance will include:

  • Kite making training for volunteers and educators
  • Kite making workshops for local high school science classes and university engineering departments
  • Partial funding of kite making materials
