On Wednesday, June, 15 th, Drachen Board member Keith Yoshida and DF staff Kiyomi Okawa visited the World Kite Museum in Long Beach, Washington, to install the first phase of a DF 2007 grant for interpretive and directional signage.
This first phase, designed by the Drachen Foundation, includes museum-quality directional signage (emergency exits, restrooms, museum hours). The second phase will include exhibit and Hall of Fame signage to be installed in August in time for the annual Washington State International Kite Festival.
Founded in the 1980s, by Jim and Kay Buesing, who wanted to gather an international representation of kites, the museum currently houses a collection of more than 1,500 kites from many cultures; including the celebrated Asian collection of David and Dorthea Checkley as well as other international historical and contemporary kites and kite memorabilia. In addition to hosting exhibits, the World Kite Museum sponsors workshops and school educational tours to educate about the world of kiting.
