In a unique collaboration with Artist Trust, a non-profit organization dedicated to supporting Washington state artists, the Drachen Foundation is sponsoring Art Takes Flight, a special art kite auction and day of public events in the bourgeoning artist community of Tieton, Washington. The kites, to be sold in auction to benefit Artist Trust and its statewide grants and services for artists, were a joint effort between Artist Trust, 33 celebrated Washington artists, and kite artist and Drachen president Scott Skinner.
The washi and bamboo kites are versions of Japanese kaku, buka, suruga, ken, and rocket kites adapted from Drachen’s Two-In-One Kite Kits designed by Nobuhiko Yoshizumi. The blank kite sails, donated by Drachen and Hiromi Paper International, were decorated by artists, shipped to Skinner for sparring, and then back to Drachen for photography and documentation.
In addition to the dinner and art kite auction, Art Takes Flight will feature an exhibition of art kites by Skinner and an exhibit of Drachen Foundation’s Paper in Flight kites. Entertainment for the evening includes an installation performance by Seattle sound sculpture artist Trimpin.
Tieton will also be hosting a day of public events, including kite making and flying demonstrations, book art demonstrations, letterpress and photo exhibits.
