The Drachen Foundation is supporting the Pacific Northwest chapter of The Explorers Club in offering a Young Explorer Field Experience to a high school sophomore or junior in March 2006. The student will participate in imaging, through kite aerial photography [KAP], the surface expression of geomorphic features indicative of recent faulting. Other members of the research team are Mike Rymer, Western Region U.S. Geological Survey geologist on the Earthquake Hazards Team and Scott Haefner, USGS webmaster and KAP photographer. The student's travel and expenses during the field trip will be paid by The Explorers Club with additional funding provided by the Drachen Foundation. The Explorers Club will also support the student in presenting her/his research results to members of the Explorers Club regional chapter. In addition, the teacher who nominates the winning applicant will receive $500 to enhance the science curriculum at her/his school.
Please visit the Pacific Northwest Explorers Club site (www.nwexplorers.org/Young.htm) to read a fuller description of the project and to download application forms. Applications are due by December 30, 2005.
